Dragon Mating Flights

Dragons will come into maturity any time from a Turn upwards, though the average is around 16 months. There will be an increase in rather blatant flirting from all the colours ... many will urge their to be more competitive with other riders to attract a certain dragons attentions. That is one sign of impending sexual maturity.
For greenriders, the time before a flight is characterized by a certain sensitivity which slips easily into irritation, anger, snappishness and over emotionality, or proddiness. Female riders may think of it as a magnified time of the month experience.
Mental preoccupation with sex will increase, which may be difficult to tell for some. It is difficult to monitor, hence why people are often surprised when they suddenly realize their green or gold is off rising. The moment that their hide appears a really vivid green or have a near glow means there is very little time before she goes up. It is not as marked as the gold shimmer of a gold, but it is noticeable.
While golds must blood their kills before they rise, greens have the option of blooding their kills or not. Some do it out of habit, others out of want, but none do it out of need. Once a green is in the air, they tend to 'play' with their suitors. They do not have the same contempt for chasers as does a gold, and often 'pick' their mate rather than see who survives the longest. A green does not have the same biological drives as a gold does, so the need for the 'best' male are relaxed, and much goes upon conscious choice. For this reason, a green is much less likely to mate with a dragon who's rider is disagreeable to her own.
Golds mature slower sexually than greens do. They usually rise to mate around 2 Turns (greens are closer to 1 Turn). They always blood their kills for the energy the blood provides and many times need to be forced not to swallow the meat to keep her light. It is the responsibility of the rider to make sure that her gold bloods only. Once the gold is in the air, the bronzes give chase in an acrobatic aerial race. The gold's object is to go as long as possible without being caught to ensure that only the bronze with the greatest strength and endurance will catch her. It is also important that she is high in the air to ensure a large clutch. Dragons mate in mid-air, plummeting towards the earth. Just before they hit the ground, they separate and glide to safety. They only have the time during the fall for the bronze to impregnate the gold. A short fall usually results in a small clutch, and vice versa.
During her gold's flight, a weyrwoman has the very important job of keeping her gold safe. She must keep her gold from consuming any meat before the flight as it weighs the gold down. She has to maintain her control over her gold and keep her only drinking the energy-giving blood. Once the gold is in the air, the weyrwoman must keep her gold going for as long as possible, offering encouragement and support. Many times, the rider's choice does affect the gold's, but not always. Once the gold is caught by a bronze (and the rare brown), then it is the rider's duty to keep her gold from going b*tween.
Dragonlust is a very powerful emotion. A rider become aware of a driving need. The link between dragon and rider dragon is primal at this time, with the rider FEELING what they feel, both are together in a way and intensity that is possibly only experienced at Impression. The rider may feel somewhat like one of those dreams where they are aware something is going on because there is a part of them experiencing it, and a part of them observing them experiencing it. That part of them observing is the bit that gets the rider to a flight room when all they can see is what your dragon sees and taste what your dragon tastes. By the time the green is ready to fly you will have merged with them thoroughly and then feel the sensation of flight, how the dragon feels to fly. It is worth it for that alone. At this point there is very little in the way of reasoning going on, just sensation, an immediacy and the rider will end up having sex, rather primal sex at first with whoever is close at hand.
Flight rooms are located near the Ground weyrs on the Southwest corner of Weyr, easily reached from the Bowl. The Flight rooms consist of a single large room and then several smaller off-shoot rooms with nothing but a bed and curtains to give privacy. The main room is usually where riders congregate while the flight is taking place, and the smaller rooms where the pairing takes place.
The mating rider are usually the winner of the flight - but not always. The flying rider can arrange to have a preferred partner there if they have read the signs. However the signs are not always that easy to pick up. Greenriders tend to have a rather passionate nature in general and they rarely have problem with who they end up with, it is the other rider who do according to their preference.
If the rider is of a weyr background, the fact they can end up with anyone, male or female in a flight is not new and is acceptable. Those Riders from Hold or Craft backgrounds will have to adjust to this as a fact of life. It may seem strange, but if they're a male into girls and wake up next to a man the following morning, having enjoyed the experience does not mean they are a monster. It does not mean they are obliged to pursue a relationship with that person or that things have to change, not like it would in the Hold environment. It is encouraged to actively start experimenting in this regard, particularly if they have not had opportunity to do so. It is a hard thing to do to lose one's virginity in a flight because the other participant will not be in a position to control themselves that effectively, nor will the rider.
Riders will not always end up with their weyrmates, or even their primary sexual preference. They may feel they don't know what to do but the primal nature of dragonlust takes it's course in a flight, with the awkwardness comes after when they awake.
After a flight, if riders are in any discomfort go to the Infirmary. There is nothing to be ashamed of, most of the healers have seen it all before and in a couple of cases, experienced it too. A few minutes to get checked over is better than contracting a fever from a minor wound. Male pairs are particularly likely to be in need of this treatment as the thought of adequate preparation is often nowhere near their mind as the dragonlust takes over.
Flight unions should be wholly consensual. Until a person is ready, they should should steer clear of the flight room or risk a rider trying to flight moth with them. They should be able to take no for an answer but it may be difficult to get them to hear! For the dragons, if they fail, the sensation and urgency is over taken by exhaustion - for the humans the sexual desire has to be worked off. It depends on the flight, the rider's reactions, the intensity of the emotional sensation as to how long this can take. It can be over in candlemarks, or a very short time.
Greenflights can produce disturbances that are not compulsive as such but raise the arousal level in bystanders, and this is particularly true for Goldflights, where the gold's projections can literally cause orgies. Only the participants of the flight will HAVE to satisfy their needs, but for a Holder or crafter to be near a flight going up, the experience can be disturbing. They are not used to such things. Most Weyrfolk are used to such occurrences and learn how to best deal with them. Also it can produce reactions in other creatures, livestock and the like, so for this reason a rider should keep a note of roughly when their dragon is ready to rise and stay within the Weyr. This is very important. And be aware that a threadscore, or being off her food can result in an unexpected rising or delay in rising so for the same reason, you should remain close to the weyr in that time. If a rider gets caught out, they should hightail it back to the Weyr the moment she shows a colour change.
The following day, courtesy and politeness should make it obvious that the riders should thank their partner. If a rider has to leave, they should write a note or something similar. Many flights can result in pregnancies and it's nice for the resulting child to at least know who their parents are.
