During their Candidate Classes, all potential Weyrlings create their own garment for wearing on the Hatching Sands. Because this is the first thing that a hatchling will see in a potential bonded partner, these outfits are often some of the most ornate in the Weyr. The most basic of these robes looks like nothing more than a sack with holes in it for arms and head. The most common design, and the one that is taught in classes looks like the image provided below and most Candidate follow this style. Very few have time to do anything more than the Weyr's preferred style, and because it is very, very ornate - 99% of them do not modify it. The Candidate Robes are always white. No other color is permitted. Gloves are provided, though they are often doffed before the Candidate reaches the sands.
The female dress/robe is usually a very gauzy, almost see-through skirt that ties to the neck by attaching to a rolled fabric loop which clasps behind the neck. White slippers are worn beneath, a small, thin protection against the heat of the sands. The dress is held up by raised shoulder straps in addition to the neckline. A thin, very see through shawl is worn behind the body and draped over the arms.
Males also wear a dress-like outfit. The bottom of their robes is not in any way see through like the womens, and it is covered near the groin in a white leather that protects their genitals from accidental mauling from sharp hatchling claws. The top is short sleeved, in a pauldren style and unless they wear a white shirt below it, their vested top-half is left open. Unless it is mid-winter, and the coldest time of year, the undershirt is left off. Thicker soled boots in white leather are provided for the men, and because of the thick soles, this is often why the male Candidates look much less nervous than the females who can be seen shifting feet as their slippers begin providing less protection.
