Saluting:
You salute those of higher rank than you. You’ll be tapped into a wing, and it’s up to your wingleader to decide if he wants you to salute on a regular basis. But even if you’re wingleader is your best friend and you’re inseparable, on formal occasions you should salute him or her as befits the circumstances. If you’re unsure if saluting is the right thing to do in a situation, salute. Better safe than sorry.
Formal Greetings:
You need to remember to give a formal greeting when someone is visiting here, or you’re visiting there. If you’re visiting the weavers for instance, you would say: "High Reaches's duties to the Weavers." If you were going to Igen Weyr you'd say: "High Reaches's duties to Igen Weyr and her queens." If you're not sure where someone is from, you can use "High Reaches’s duties" for short, but formal greetings are the norm and should be given.
Titles:
It's always best to refer to a ranking person by their title (Weyrwoman, Weyrleader, Craftmaster, Wingleader, Lord Holder, Headwoman, Bluerider, etc), unless they specifically ask you not to. If you don't know their title, sir or ma'am is often a very safe bet. Lord or Lady followed by their name is also appropriate for the Weyrleaders, though calling them by their rider rank is always appropriate.
Issues of Rank
Numbers, where present, are suggested numbers of such personnel and do not necessarily represent the actual number at any given Weyr.
The placement of the Weyrwomen in the support structure may be misleading; the Weyrwomen do in fact ride Fall, in the Queen's Wing, but that Wing, while in Threadfall, is technically under the authority of the Threadfall leader.
On the ground, Weyrleader and Weyrwoman share equal rank, Junior Weyrwomen tend to outrank Wingleaders, and all Riding personnel technically outrank the Headwoman and CavernsStaff. It should be noted that this is, in practice, often not precisely the case.
OOC, Weyr management is handled by the admin team which consists of Sigyn and Big Sister. In between Hatching cycles, most admin issues are more easily and expediently handled by the Weyrleaders and the Headwoman. During the Clutch, Search, and Hatching process, however, the admin team as a whole becomes absolutely crucial; RL permitting, each member of the team participates, with the Weyrleaders responsible for making sure that everything gets done. Immediately following the Hatching, the Weyrlingmaster team, consisting of the Weyrlingmaster and two or more Assistants, swings into high gear with the Weyrleaders in a supporting position as far as the training of the new rider pairs. Once again, basic admin is handled by the Weyrleaders at that point.
The Craft and Hold trees are there merely for reference, and cannot be used to directly compare rank. An apprentice does not have the same approximate rank as a Wingsecond! However, a Lord/Lady Holder and a Craftmaster should be treated with the same deference as you would a Weyrleader. Craftseconds and Minor Holders are roughly equivalent to Weyrseconds, Masters and Cot Holders to Wingleaders, and Journeymen to Wingseconds. Apprentices and residents share the same rank as any resident or wingrider.
